Women have different concerns than men when performing Umrah, such as what to do during menstruation, whether a woman can travel without a mahram to perform Umrah, and what to wear when entering the state of ihram.
In recent times, the Saudi Arabian authorities have permitted women to perform Umrah without a mahram.
However, from an Islamic perspective, women are generally not allowed to travel alone without a mahram.
It is best to consult with a religious scholar or authority in your community before deciding to travel for Umrah alone.
The Talbiyah is an essential part of Umrah and Hajj, recited by both men and women.
While male pilgrims are required to recite the Talbiyah loudly, female pilgrims should recite it softly so that it is audible only to themselves.
For Umrah, men must wear the ihram garment, consisting of two pieces: the izar and the rida.
Women, however, can wear any modest clothing that covers their awrah.
The dress code for women should be simple and modest. Additionally, women should avoid perfumes, fragrances, jewelry, and makeup while in ihram.
Between Safa and Marwa, there are two sets of green fluorescent lights approximately 50 meters apart, marking the distance that Hajar ran to reach higher ground.
Between these lights, it is sunnah for men to run at a medium pace, while women should continue walking at their normal pace.
Raml is an emphasized sunnah for male pilgrims during the first three rounds of tawaf, which involves running at a medium pace.
Women do not need to perform this ritual, as it is specifically for men as a display of strength.
Women should plan ahead to avoid menstruation during Umrah, as certain rituals require being free from menstruation.
If menstruation does occur, remember that Aisha RA experienced the same. The Prophet ﷺ said, “This is ordained by Allah for the daughters of Adam. Do all the pilgrim rituals except tawaf.”
Male pilgrims are required to shave their heads at the completion of Umrah, while female pilgrims need to trim a small amount of hair about the size of a fingernail to mark the conclusion of their Umrah.

The article is educative for women planning to perform Umra. Women should not perform it without a Mahram, as no Muslim women is permitted in Sharia to travel alone, without a Mahram for whatever reason and whatever the purpose it may be. Government permitting them to come alone for Umra or Hajj, is not a license from Allah or his Prophet SAW. You should know the rules of the game before playing any game, This applies very well to Umra and Hajj. Therefore acquaint yourself with them in advance to make your Hajj and Umra successful.
