Muslims in the United Kingdom (UK) will follow Saudi Arabia to celebrate Eid al Fitr on April 10, 2024, as the Shawwal moon has not been sighted in the country.
The announcement was made by the UK’s moon sighting committee, which has the responsibility of determining the beginning of Islamic months and festivals.
The Shawwal moon marks the end of Ramadan, the month in which all Muslims fast. Eid al-Fitr is determined by the shawwal moon, first shawwal in the UK will be on April 10, hence Eid al-Fitr.
The United Kingdom follows Saudi Arabia’s Islamic calendar due to difficult weather to sight the moon, because of its geographical location and weather patterns.
Muslims in the UK will celebrate Eid al-Fitr by offering Eid prayer and then a custom of giving Eidi money to the younger children.
