UK: Man Dies While Reading Quran in Birmingham

Hassan, who had escaped the ongoing conflict in Syria, was discovered by his wife, still holding his Quran.

The family had hoped to start anew in the UK, but now face their new reality without him. Hassan’s parents passed away when he was young, and his brother and four sisters remain in Syria.

Oldbury-based Iqbal & Sons Bereavement Service has stepped in to cover the costs of Hassan’s funeral through their free Muslim funeral program.

The company shared, “He arrived in August, and just a week later, his wife found him slumped at a desk, holding the Quran. It’s a tragic situation.”

An appeal has been launched to raise £3,700 for his burial plot at Sutton New Hall Cemetery, with more than double that amount already raised.

Text of the appeal: “Sharing the story of Hassan Khebbeiz, a 59-year-old refugee from Damascus, Syria, whose life was marked by hardship and resilience. He lost his parents at a young age and worked as a laborer to support his family. He came to the UK, for a better life.

“Tragically, Hassan passed away suddenly while reading the Quran in the temporary accommodation provided by the government. His wife and two young children, now alone in the UK, must navigate this difficult time without the support of extended family.

“We are mourning the passing of Hassan, we seek your support to raise £3,700 for his burial plot fee. While the funeral director costs are generously covered by Iqbal & Sons Bereavement Services, we need your help to ensure Hassan is laid to rest with the dignity he deserves.”

  • Really sad to hear this. Let Allah grant him Jannah & safeguard his family from misery in this hard time & Islamophobia in UK. Muslim Umma in UK should come forward to sustain his family & ensure that the children are brought up well & don’t suffer like their father. The Zakath amount of rich and well to do people should be specifically reserved for such people. Allah is Great.
