Dubai police have detained a group of female Western tourists after a viral video showed them mocking a burqa-clad woman at a local restaurant, sparking widespread outrage.
The incident occurred while the woman was dining with her husband. The tourists, without her consent, filmed her and reportedly mocked her attire, including her hijab.
The video was later uploaded to social media, drawing sharp criticism from the public.
A statement from Dubai police confirmed the arrests, emphasizing that the tourists violated UAE laws by filming the woman without permission. The police highlighted the UAE’s strong stance on respecting all religions, beliefs, and cultures. They reiterated that mocking or criticizing another person’s cultural or religious practices is a punishable offense.
The police further clarified that the tourists’ actions breached public decency laws and disrespected local customs. The video, which shows the tourists laughing and making inappropriate remarks about the woman’s attire, has led to significant backlash online.
Social media users have overwhelmingly condemned the behavior of the tourists and lauded Dubai authorities for their swift response. The detained individuals are now facing legal action for their misconduct.
