About 1.9 million people were injured. About 13.8 million Syrians lost their livelihoods due to Syrian war in the region.

In the five years since the outbreak of the civil war in Syria, about 470,000 people have died in the country, according to a new report published by the non-profit Syrian Center for Policy Studies. This figure is almost double the latest estimates of the UN.

The report notes that 400,000 Syrians died as a result of hostilities, and the remaining 70,000 people lost their lives due to the fact that they were deprived of everything they needed, including access to proper medical care, housing, normal sanitation, food and water.

According to this center operating in Damascus, for the entire conflict that began in March 2011, 11.5 percent of Syria’s population died or were injured. Prior to this, the same figures were published by the British newspaper The Guardian.

Earlier, the UN reported about 250 thousand dead and 12 million refugees and displaced persons, however, according to the newspaper, the UN Human Rights Committee stopped counting the death toll in mid-2014, as there was no access to sources of reliable information.

According to the center, from the beginning of the Syrian war, approximately 1.9 million people were injured. About 13.8 million Syrians lost their livelihood. A total of 45 percent of the population were forced to leave their homes, including 4 million people who had fled the country, and 6.4 million people who had become internally displaced.

The report is based on a survey of approximately 2,100 people in 700 districts of the country. The group conducts reconciliation of data from different sources with secondary data and research results conducted by third parties.

The US-led coalition fights the “Islamic state” in Syria and demands the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad, but Russia and Iran support Assad, attacking his opponents, including some supported by a coalition of insurgents. Last year, the UN Security Council announced that the situation in Syria has become “the world’s largest humanitarian crisis threatening peace and stability in the region.”
