Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa has placed a fragment of the Holy Kaaba’s Kiswa covering in the courtyard of the historic Umayyad Mosque, describing it as a gift from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

President Al-Sharaa received the sacred fragment during his first official foreign visit to Saudi Arabia earlier this year.

In his speech at the Damascus mosque, he explained his decision to place the covering there so that “nations might unite and bonds of love and brotherhood might extend from Makkah to the Levant.”

The first anniversary of opposition forces led by Al-Sharaa seizing control of major Syrian cities, culminating in the capture of Damascus on December 8 last year following former President Bashar al-Assad’s flight from the country.

Saudi Arabia’s leadership simultaneously sent official congratulations, with Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman both dispatching cables to President Al-Sharaa acknowledging Syria’s Liberation Day.

In his address, Al-Sharaa pledged to rebuild Syria into a nation befitting its historical significance, directly telling citizens: “O Syrians, obey me as long as I obey God in my dealings with you.”

He vowed that no obstacles would hinder national recovery efforts, emphasizing collective responsibility in facing upcoming challenges.
