Travel time to Masjid al-Haram (Grand Mosque) in Makkah has dropped by up to 90 per cent after the opening of a new Third Ring Road extension.
The Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites says the new section makes the trip far quicker for residents, pilgrims and visitors.
The extension adds 1.5 km to the city’s road network. It is part of the project to complete the Third Ring Road, one of four major ring roads around Makkah.

How Much Shorter Is the Trip to Masjid al-Haram?
The distance from the Prince Miteb intersection to Masjid al-Haram (Grand Mosque) has fallen from 16.5 km to 6.5 km. That is 10 km less on every journey.
The commission says traffic now moves better, especially at peak hours and during the Hajj and Umrah seasons.

Capacity and Other Benefits
The new road can carry up to 170,000 vehicles a day in both directions. The commission lists three benefits:
- Smoother traffic flow with less congestion
- Safer roads
- Easier access to Makkah for residents and visitors

The same project also cuts the route to the Jamarat facility in Mina from 12 km to 4 km. The road is part of wider work to upgrade Makkah’s road network and ease pressure on nearby routes.
