The Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (Abim) has confirmed that one of the men who narrowly escaped falling into the sinkhole that swallowed a woman on Jalan Masjid India has converted to Islam just three days after the incident.
According to Abim, the man embraced Islam at their Islamic outreach center, IOA, located in the National Mosque.
“Abim confirms that the new convert accepted Islam under the guidance of IOA Masjid Negara last Monday,” said Abim’s president, Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin.
He emphasized that choosing a religion is a fundamental right for everyone and that no one should be forced into matters of faith. Ahmad Fahmi also called for calm and respect for the privacy of the new convert.
A closed-circuit television (CCTV) recording released by the Fire Department shows one of the men on a bench near the sinkhole falling into it up to his waist but managing to pull himself back up. The other three men on the bench quickly moved away from the area.
The sinkhole also swallowed an Indian woman, who has yet to be found. The search has now entered its seventh day.
