Male Muslim business owners, employees, and customers in Johor are required to temporarily pause business activities, including restaurant operations, during Friday prayer time.
Johor Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid said this step ensures Muslim men fulfill their obligation to perform Friday prayers.
“The Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) will enforce this to ensure all male Muslims in Johor attend Friday prayers,” he told reporters during the state assembly sitting yesterday.
He added that only male Muslims are required to halt business activities, refraining from trading, working, or dining during the prayer period.
Exemptions are given to non-Muslims and Muslim women.
Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced during the Johor Budget 2025 presentation on Thursday that the state government will extend the Friday lunch break for public and private sectors to two hours starting January 1, compared to the current one hour and 30 minutes.
Regarding the upcoming shift to Saturday-Sunday weekends beginning January 1, Mohd Fared addressed concerns about school uniforms for Friday religious classes.
“Some parents might prefer their children to remain in their national school uniforms rather than switching to religious attire. That’s not an issue for us. What matters is that students attend school and perform Friday prayers,” he said.
