Indonesia To Promote Eco-Friendly Mosque During ISIM 2024

“Beyond being places of worship, mosques should serve as centers of civilization that address global challenges like climate change,” said Ahmad Zayadi, the ministry’s acting director for Islamic affairs, in a statement released Saturday.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs will host the International Symposium on Innovative Mosques (ISIM) in Surakarta, Central Java, from October 1–3, 2024, aiming to encourage mosques to adopt eco-friendly practices.

Zayadi emphasized that mosques hold a strategic role not only as religious spaces but also as hubs for learning and social transformation. To highlight this, the ministry is organizing ISIM 2024 with the theme “Eco-friendly Mosque, Climate Change, and Future Generation.” The goal is to remind people that mosques can evolve into institutions that adapt to societal changes.

“It’s time to rethink how mosques can remain relevant to modern needs, leading the way in adopting eco-friendly technologies,” he added.

On the topic of sustainability, Zayadi noted that the symposium will also focus on helping mosques achieve energy efficiency. “By promoting eco-friendly mosques, we can inspire congregations to pay closer attention to environmental conservation,” he said.

The event will include sessions such as presentations, book reviews, and discussions with experts on mosque development and environmental sustainability, according to Akmal Salim Ruhana, head of the ministry’s Sub-directorate of Mosque Affairs.

Additionally, there will be an exhibition of eco-friendly mosque designs and the Model and Friendly Mosque Award, which will feature mosques from across Indonesia. Participants can join the symposium virtually by registering via bit.ly/isim_2024.

Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas is expected to open the event and deliver the keynote address. The symposium will also include academicians, researchers, and mosque activists from various countries.
