A violent hailstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall hit Pakistan’s capital Islamabad and surrounding areas on Wednesday evening, causing extensive damage to vehicles, homes, and Faisal Mosque.
Social media was flooded with videos showing the aftermath of the storm, with many vehicles suffering smashed windscreens and side windows. The most striking images, however, depicted the extensive damage at Faisal Mosque, where windows, lights, and other glass elements were shattered, leaving the iconic structure battered.
The Islamabad district administration confirmed that emergency teams were rapidly deployed to manage traffic and clear rainwater from the streets. “We are assessing the full extent of the damage, with numerous reports of broken glass in vehicles and buildings,” said an administration spokesperson.
Rescue teams were sent to key highways, while drainage operations were carried out to prevent waterlogging.
Local resident Ahmed Qureshi reported significant damage to his vehicle, estimating repair costs at around $178 (Rs50,000). “The hailstorm caused severe dents and shattered glass,” he said.
Mechanic shops in G-6 Markaz saw a surge in inquiries about windshield replacements, with costs ranging from $57 to $135 (Rs16,000 to Rs38,000). Mechanics noted that suppliers were inundated with requests.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department had warned of rain and thunderstorms in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, and other parts of Punjab on Wednesday evening.
Authorities are urging caution as cleanup and recovery efforts continue, particularly around Faisal Mosque, where the glass damage has drawn significant attention.

“The damage at Faisal Mosque underscores the storm’s intensity,” the administration spokesperson added. “We are working hard to restore normalcy and address the damage.”
