The cleric made the declaration on X (formerly Twitter) while responding to a follower who questioned the Islamic perspective on acquiring Australian citizenship.
Sheikh Assim’s remarks have since gone viral, sparking widespread debate across social media platforms.
“A Muslim is not allowed to take the citizenship of a kafir country when he already is a citizen of a Muslim country and has a Muslim passport,” Sheikh Assim wrote in his viral post.
While Sheikh Assim has yet to address the flood of follow-up questions from netizens, his statement has triggered significant discourse.
“How do you define a Muslim country, Sheikh?” asked one user, while another queried, “What about Muslims born in a kafir country? Should they migrate?”
Others asked broader questions about the definition of a non-Muslim country. “What qualifies a country as a kaafir? And if it wants to revert, how will it do the shahada? How does a country follow the pillars of Islam?”
