Sheikh Dr. Abdulrahman Al‑Sudais, head of the Religious Affairs Directorate for Islam’s two holiest sites, has ordered the formal inclusion of backup imams and muezzins in the daily prayer roster.

This new policy ensures that each of the five daily prayers at Masjid al‑Haram and Masjid an‑Nabawi will have both a primary and a standby prayer leader and caller.

Under the updated framework from the Agency for Imams and Muezzins, a backup imam and backup muezzin will be on duty alongside the principal appointees.

Should the designated imam or muezzin be unable to lead the prayer—for reasons ranging from scheduling conflicts to sudden illness—the secondary official will immediately assume responsibilities, preserving the sanctity and punctuality of the ritual.

Sheikh Al‑Sudais emphasized that this measure strengthens the organizational structure of prayer services and reflects the global significance of the Two Holy Mosques.

“By guaranteeing a reserve for every prayer, we uphold our obligation to pilgrims and worshipers, ensuring that the call to prayer and its performance remain flawless,” he said.

Pilgrims can look forward to continuous and seamless prayer services throughout the year, with no interruption in the adhan or congregational prayers.
