Edo State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board confirmed the death of a 75-year-old Nigerian pilgrim, Adizatu Dazumi, on Tuesday. Dazumi, who is from Edo State, died during the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.
Dazumi, who hailed from Jattu Uzairue, in Etsako West Local Government Area, reportedly passed away at King Fahad General Hospital in Makkah following a brief illness. Officials said she had completed the Tawaaf ritual—the circumambulation of the Kaaba—before her condition worsened.
She was admitted to the King Fahd hospital on Sunday and died the next day. In line with Islamic rites, she was buried in Makkah shortly after, and her family in Nigeria has been notified.
Musah Uduimoh, Chairman of the Edo State Pilgrims Board speaking to reporters, expressed deep condolences to the family and community of the deceased.
“She was laid to rest the same day in the holy land, as prescribed in Islam. Our thoughts are with her loved ones back home in Jattu,” Uduimoh said.
He added that the board remains committed to safeguarding the health and welfare of all pilgrims throughout the Hajj period.
Dazumi’s passing is a sobering reminder of the physical demands of the pilgrimage, especially for elderly participants. While she had successfully performed one of Hajj’s most revered rites, her death adds to the ongoing concern about health risks during the sacred journey.
In past years, Nigerian pilgrims have faced similar fates. During Hajj 2023, at least four pilgrims from Nigeria were confirmed dead due to complications from pre-existing medical conditions exacerbated by heat and exertion.
Saudi and Nigerian authorities have since ramped up efforts to mitigate such risks through enhanced medical screenings, pilgrim health briefings, and expanded access to emergency care. However, the physical rigor of Hajj remains a serious challenge, particularly for senior pilgrims.

As salaams to you,
Beefing up on medical screenings..? Why !
I think it is an honour to die in the holy lands especially whilst performing Haj or Umrah. I always make dua that I “go” from there, after performing Haj or Umrah. Screenings must NOT be a reason to stop the elderly from performing Haj, please…………! Sometimes it takes a lifetime to get there, so no blocking of the elderly please…
