Mushrooms are a type of fungus that grows above ground. In some Arabic dialects, they are even known as “crows’ bread” because one of the common varieties resembles a round of pita bread, which crows would often eat.

Scientifically, mushrooms consist of numerous microscopic thread-like structures that combine to form the visible fungus. While many mushrooms offer excellent nutritional benefits, some types are poisonous and can cause serious health issues.

Is Eating Mushrooms Permissible?

The fundamental Islamic principle regarding food and drink is that all things are permissible unless there is clear evidence in the religious texts that they are prohibited.

Explicit prohibitions in Islam include items like meat that has not been slaughtered in the prescribed manner, blood, alcohol, and pork, as well as anything that is harmful.

Based on this principle, there is nothing inherently wrong with consuming mushrooms that are healthy and beneficial.

Evidence

  • However, caution must be exercised with mushrooms that are poisonous or harmful.
  • The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon Him) said, “There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.” (Narrated by Ibn Maajah, 2340; classed as authentic by Ibn Majah in Sahih Ibn Majah) This means that consuming any food that is harmful to one’s health is not permissible.
  • Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymin (may Allah have mercy on him) stated that it is not permissible to consume anything that harms the body, as one of the aims of Islamic teachings is to protect physical well-being. (Al-Liqa’ ash-Shahri 33/5)

Bottom Line

Mushrooms come in many types, some beneficial and others dangerous:

1. Safe and Beneficial Mushrooms:

  • Rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals.
  • Low in fat and cholesterol-free.
  • Used as a nutritional supplement and remedy for conditions like anemia.

2. Poisonous Mushrooms:

  • Can cause vomiting, fainting, or even death.
  • Examples: Death cap, fly agaric, bioluminescent mushrooms.

Eating mushrooms is permissible in Islam as long as they are confirmed to be free from harm and beneficial to health. Mushrooms that are nutritious and safe to eat fall within the realm of permissible foods. However, any type of mushroom that is poisonous or harmful must be avoided.
