The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has confirmed its prohibition on aerial photography using drones during the Hajj 2026 (1447) pilgrimage unless prior permits are obtained from the relevant authorities.
During a media workshop on Hajj and Umrah in Jakarta on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, led by Hassan Al-Manakhra, Deputy for Foreign Relations at the Ministry. Al-Manakhra emphasized the importance of aligning information systems to ensure pilgrims receive accurate and trustworthy guidance.
“Our aim in holding this workshop is to create and align the information system on Hajj and Umrah,”
Al-Manakhra told participating journalists, adding that the Saudi government is committed to strengthening ties with the Indonesian media.
He stressed that providing accurate information is essential for ensuring pilgrims can perform their rituals with peace of mind.
The session encouraged journalists to share challenges in obtaining reliable information, with some suggesting the creation of a dedicated media center to facilitate real-time communication with officials.
Moath, media manager at the Ministry, explained that official updates on Hajj are available through the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah’s website, official social media platforms, the Saudi Ministry of Media, and the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
In addition to the drone ban, the Ministry also reminded attendees that installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) networks inside hotels in Makkah and Medina requires prior approval from the Saudi General Authority for Media Regulation.
The workshop concluded with calls for journalists to rely on official spokespersons and verified statistics, as part of efforts to curb misinformation and improve the flow of credible Hajj-related updates worldwide.
