The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced a collaboration with Saudi Arabia to introduce a new digital health card for pilgrims during the Hajj.
The initiative aims to provide enhanced health support to the approximately 3 million Muslims who travel to Mecca each year, as reported by Anadolu Agency.
The digital Hajj health card, developed on the WHO Global Digital Health Certification Network, will store vital health information such as medication needs, allergies, immunization status, and pre-existing conditions.
This will allow pilgrims to securely share their health details with authorized medical personnel, ensuring personalized and efficient healthcare throughout their pilgrimage.
WHO Chief Scientist Jeremy Farrar said, “This marks a significant step in WHO’s efforts to expand access to digital health tools that enhance the safety and quality of care,”.
He expressed gratitude for the partnership with Saudi Arabia and participating nations, emphasizing the focus on strengthening digital health infrastructure.
The WHO highlighted that the Hajj, drawing Muslims from over 180 countries, is the largest pilgrimage globally.
A 2024 test phase of the health card showed improved safety and care for pilgrims.
