The army authorities have taken a ‘policy decision’ for this. An internal office order of the Adjutant General’s (AG) office informed the concerned. It has made the wearing of hijab optional for female army personnel. That is, women army members can wear hijab from now on.
Quoting an office order, some online news portal says that the restrictions on wearing hijab by female army personnel of other ranks, including officers and those working in the Armed Forces Nursing Service (AFNS), have been lifted recently.
It is also said in the news that on September 3, a policy decision was taken in the PSO conference regarding the approval of the wearing of hijab with the uniform of the willing women army personnel. Earlier there was a directive not to wear hijab with uniform. At the same time, the AG’s office has also asked for a policy on wearing hijab.
According to the office order, to finalize the policy, women army members (officers, AFNS and other ranks) have been asked to describe in detail the actual sample of hijab compatible with the uniform (combat uniform, working dress, saree), the type of hijab fabric, color and measurement.
Along with the uniform (combat uniform, working dress, saree) the color photograph of the female army member wearing the proposed hijab has been asked to be sent to the concerned department by September 26.
