Mr. Tee, also called the King of Desserts, shared a TikTok video filmed in Sunderland that quickly garnered over 2.6 million views. In the video, he handed out ice creams to a van full of officers, with the 1980s TV show ‘The A-Team’ theme song playing in the background.
“We just wanted to show them a little bit of love,” Mr. Tee, whose real name is Ashiq, told Reuters.
The two-minute video, which featured a police officer requesting a special birthday ice cream for a colleague, resonated with many in the UK, where the majority of people view the ongoing riots as unjustified, according to a recent YouGov poll.
One commenter, sayithowitis1970, noted, “This is brill — remember under the uniforms there is a dad, husband, uncle, brother, human.”
Recent anti-immigration protests have sparked riots across Britain, with far-right groups attacking hotels housing asylum seekers and targeting mosques.
Mr. Tee mentioned that most of the positive feedback on his video came from non-Muslims who appreciate their community. “It’s just a very small minority that unfortunately feels this way,” he said.
Based in Wrexham, a town in northern Wales, Mr. Tee announced that he would take a week off to let the tensions around the country cool down. “Some people are scared to leave the house, especially women who don’t want to be seen wearing their hijabs,” he noted.
Despite the troubling situation, Mr. Tee pointed to the overwhelming response to his video as a reason for optimism. “It just showed the genuine true colors of Great Britain and the welcoming nature of its people.”
