This sacred site marks the exact location where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) established his command center during the pivotal Battle of Badr in 624 CE.
The name “Areesh” itself carries historical weight, derived from the Arabic word for a shelter made of palm leaves.
This humble structure would become the headquarters from which the Prophet (PBUH) would direct one of Islam’s most consequential military engagements, transforming a small band of believers into a force that would alter the religious landscape forever.

The Battle of Badr took place on March 13, 624 CE (17th of Ramadan, 2 AH), marking the first major military victory for the nascent Muslim community. What made this battle extraordinary was the dramatic imbalance of forces—313 Muslims faced a well-equipped Meccan army that substantially outnumbered them.
Despite this disadvantage, the Muslims achieved a decisive victory that would establish their presence in Arabia.
The Construction of Areesh
One of the most significant aspects of Masjid Al-Areesh is the story behind its initial construction. Before the battle commenced, Sa’d bin Mu’adh (R.A.), a prominent companion of the Prophet (PBUH), made a strategic suggestion that would prove instrumental in the battle’s outcome.
He proposed building a shelter—an areesh—to serve as headquarters for the Muslim army and provide protection for the Prophet (PBUH).

Sa’d bin Mu’adh explained that if the Muslims achieved victory, the shelter would have served its purpose. However, if they faced defeat, the Prophet (PBUH) could safely retreat to Madinah, where more supporters awaited to defend him. The Prophet (PBUH) praised Sa’d for this suggestion and invoked blessings upon him.
The shelter was fashioned from palm branches, creating a simple but effective command post. A dedicated squad of guards, primarily from among the Ansar (the Medinan supporters) and led by Sa’d bin Mu’adh (R.A.), was assigned to defend the Prophet (PBUH) during the battle.
On the night before the battle (some scholars suggest it was the morning of the battle), Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) engaged in prolonged and fervent dua to Allah.
Masjid Areesh Location
Today, Masjid Al-Areesh stands as a monument to this pivotal moment in Islamic history. Located in Al Shuhada, Badr 46363, Saudi Arabia, the mosque attracts visitors from around the world who come to connect with this significant historical site.
The mosque features separate prayer halls for men and women, along with facilities for ablution. Beyond the mosque lies the battlefield of the first major war in Islamic history, and further still is a cemetery where monuments to the martyrs of Badr can be found.
