LONDON, UK — Shabana Mahmood named UK’s first Muslim Home Secretary, taking one of Britain’s top government roles. Prime Minister Keir Starmer selected the Birmingham Ladywood MP to lead the Home Office following the recent resignation of Angela Rayner.
In a statement, Mahmood described the appointment as “the honour of my life” and emphasized her commitment to public safety. “The first responsibility of the government is the safety of its citizens. Every day in this job, I will be devoted to that purpose,” she said.
Mahmood, the daughter of Pakistani immigrants, was born in Birmingham in 1980 and spent part of her childhood in Saudi Arabia.
She attended King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls before studying law at Oxford University. After being called to the bar in 2003, she worked as a barrister specializing in professional negligence and commercial law.
Elected to Parliament in 2010 as one of Britain’s first female Muslim MPs, Mahmood has held several shadow ministerial roles including Shadow Justice Secretary and Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury.
Her appointment marks a significant milestone in British political history, reflecting both the changing face of UK leadership and the Labour Party’s commitment to diversity.
As Home Secretary, Mahmood will oversee critical departments including policing, border security, and counter-terrorism operations.
