LIVERPOOL — A Muslim-owned chip shop in Liverpool remained open on Christmas Day for the second consecutive year, provided free meals to NHS staff, emergency workers, isolated seniors, and vulnerable community members.

Mubinul Hoque, owner of Portland’s Fish and Chips on Sefton Street, views it as both a religious obligation and community responsibility.

The 36-year-old entrepreneur from Wavertree explained his motivation stems from Islamic charitable principles.

“We give back and we do a lot of charities. It’s in our belief, in our religion,” Hoque told local media.

“Christmas Day was one of those things where we don’t celebrate ourselves. So we would have been just shut. So it was like, why don’t we give back to the community?”

The shop served chippy favorites including cod fish fingers, fish and chip barms, with complimentary tea and coffee.

Since acquiring the business in February 2023, Hoque has consistently supported local causes, including sponsoring a youth football team.

This year’s Christmas operation ran from 11 AM to 5 PM, building on last year’s successful model that combined nourishment with social connection for those spending the holiday alone.
