During a religious ceremony at the Grand Mosque, workers changed the Kiswa (the black silk cloth that covers the Sacred Kaaba in Makkah) to mark the beginning of the new Islamic year 1447 Hijri.
The 2025 Kaaba’s Kiswa weights around 1415 kilograms and costs 25 million Saudi riyals.

The yearly replacement of the Kiswa was carried out by the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque on Thursday.
The process began by taking off the 6.35-by-3.33-meter gold curtain from the Kaaba’s doorway.

The new cover was put on after taking off the old one in a special ceremony performed by a team of 154 expert Saudi craftsmen.
Gold-covered silver threads are used to carefully stitch 68 Quranic verses onto 47 beautifully decorated black silk panels that form the new Kiswa. The fabric weighs about 1,415 kg in total.

It was made with 410 kilograms of raw cotton, 120 kilograms of gold-covered silver thread, 60 kilos of pure silver, and 825 kilograms of silk.
At the King Abdulaziz Complex, eight special weaving machines were also used to make 54 detailed gold parts for the Sacred Kaaba Kiswa.

Every year, the Kiswa gets replaced, starting a new part of the Islamic calendar and representing a time of renewal and respect that holds deep spiritual importance for Muslims around the world.
