In a swift response to an emergency call received via the 997 hotline, the Saudi Red Crescent in Medina promptly dispatched an advanced care team after an 85-year-old Iraqi pilgrim began experiencing severe chest pain while in the Prophet’s Mosque.
The call reported that the pilgrim, who was performing his religious duties, had suffered a cardiac arrest in the sacred courtyards.
According to Dr. Ahmed bin Ali Al-Zahrani, director of the Saudi Red Crescent’s Medina branch, the medical team immediately arrived at the scene and conducted a thorough assessment, including an electrocardiogram (ECG).
The test indicated signs of an acute heart attack, prompting the on-duty physician to confirm the diagnosis and activate the Cardiac Arrest Pathway protocol.
The patient was then quickly transported via a dedicated route—bypassing the emergency department—to the cardiac catheterization lab at the Saudi German Hospital. There, the waiting medical team administered immediate treatment, and after several rapid interventions, the patient’s condition stabilized.
Dr. Al-Zahrani praised the swift response and coordination among the emergency teams, noting that such efficiency is critical in reducing complications during emergencies.
Authorities have commended the teamwork and preparedness of the emergency response teams, highlighting the continued commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all pilgrims visiting one of Islam’s holiest sites.
