Hagia Sophia will be converted to a Mosque, Turkey’s top court approved the decision. It is located in the capital city of Turkey, Istanbul.
A Turkish court will go live with this decision today as all the signatures have been completed, Abdulkadir Seli, famous Turkish columnist confirmed The Islamic Information on Thursday.
Islamist-leaning Justice and Development Party (AKP)’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is the president of Turkey had stepped up to convert Hagia Sophia to be a place of worship with regular prayers and recitation of Quran in it.
The council of the State of Turkey had ensured that this matter will be solved in 15 days, this was said a week back.
Abdulkadir Seli also said that this decision is historical, but this decision is supportive by the people of Turkey. Meanwhile, he also said some people may call it a political step but he also said it can be a winning point for the ruling party for Turkish 2023 Elections.
Christian all around the world were against Recep Tayyip Erdogan when he announced to convert Hagia Sophia into a mosque. That also includes the top government officials as well as politicians in the United States, Russia, and the European Union. Turkey’s neighbor Greece was also highly against it.
The place used to be a Greek Cathedral and was the sear of the Greek Orthodox Church until 1453 till it came under Turkey after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople.
The building is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk ordered it to turn it into a museum back in 1934 since then it was a tourist spot.
The leader of 300 million Orthodox Christians, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew said last week, converting the building into a mosque would create tension between Christian and Muslim worlds.
