Should Husband Pay Zakat on Wife’s Jewelry (Gold)?

The husband can pay the wife’s Zakat. However, the mandatory Zakat is on the wife herself.

Zakat is a charitable act required in Islam. It is a key pillar of the faith. It is not just kindness. Furthermore, it is the duty of the wealthy.  

Can the Husband Pay Zakat for the Wife’s possession?

Zakat is mandatory on the wife herself for her jewellery.

The owner of the gold must pay Zakat. In marriage, if the wife owns gold, she must pay. The husband is not obliged to pay for her. But, if he pays with her agreement, he earns rewards.

Evidence

• Islam allows Zakat to be given flexibly. A wife can pay Zakat to a needy husband. This is in line with Quranic teachings. The Quran says Zakat is for the poor and needy (At-Tawbah 9:60).
• A Hadith supports a wife giving Zakat to her husband. The Holy Prophet encouraged this. He said women could give charity from their jewelry. This Hadith shows a wife gets two rewards. One for charity, another for supporting family.
• Scholars like Ibn Hajar say a wife can give Zakat to her husband. This view is common in Islamic law. It is accepted by Shafi’i, Hanafi, Maliki, and Hanbali schools.

Bottom Line

Zakat aims to help those in need. A husband need not pay Zakat for his wife’s gold. But he can if he chooses.

A wife can give Zakat to her husband if he is in need. This shows Islamic compassion and support. It helps to ease hardship and unite Muslims.
