The Jeddah Astronomy Society announced that the skies of Saudi Arabia and the Arab world will witness a stunning celestial event today, Thursday, October 17. The full moon of Rabi’ al-Thani will be the closest giant moon of the year 2024.

This phenomenon, also known as a supermoon, occurs when the moon reaches its full phase while at its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, making it appear larger and brighter than usual.

This supermoon will be particularly notable for its proximity, offering a rare sight for sky watchers.

Best Viewing Times

  • After sunset.

Astronomers and enthusiasts are advised to observe the moon after sunset, as it will be at its peak size and brightness when it rises over the horizon. The event will be visible across the region, weather permitting.

The Jeddah Astronomy Society also pointed out that this is the final giant moon of 2024, making it a significant celestial event not to be missed.

Observers are encouraged to capture the moment with telescopes and cameras to fully appreciate the beauty of the supermoon.
