UN Condemns Demolitions of Muslim Houses in India

Over the alleged involvement of local governments in communal clashes in April and May of this year, the United Nations strongly condemned the arbitrary demolitions of houses and properties of Muslims in India.

As a result, three UN Special Rapporteurs on Housing, Minorities, and Freedom of Religion have strongly criticized and protested the demolitions in a joint letter to the Indian government.

According to the special rapporteurs, the demolitions were carried out without due process or evidence of guilt. Muslim minorities were subjected to a “collective punishment.”

As a result, the reporters have requested that the Indian government share with them the basis on which it acted, the investigations it conducted, and whether any prior consultation was held with the affected community.

Muslims in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Delhi had their houses and properties demolished by local governments.
