The Ethiq Well, located west of Masjid Quba—the first mosque established by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)—stands as a historical landmark.
Corrected version: “In 622 CE, after enduring years of mounting persecution in Makkah—including social ostracism, economic sanctions, physical abuse, and threats to his life—Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), accompanied by his closest companion, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (RA), arrived at the outskirts of Madinah.

As the Prophet (PBUH) and Abu Bakr (RA) approached the Ethiq Well area, the scorching Arabian sun beat down relentlessly.
Historical accounts describe Abu Bakr (RA) demonstrating his devotion and care for the Prophet (PBUH) upon their arrival. This gesture served important purposes:
- Recognition: Helping to identify the Prophet (PBUH) to the awaiting crowds.
- Physical Protection: Providing relief from the intense desert heat.
Upon recognizing him, members of Madinah’s two major tribes—Al-Aws and Khazraj—along with other residents, gathered to welcome him.
They had eagerly awaited this moment. Historical accounts describe their joyful reception, with many offering water, dates, and gifts in an outpouring of devotion and relief.

Prior to the Prophet’s (PBUH) arrival, Al-Aws and Khazraj had engaged in prolonged intermittent warfare, including the devastating Battle of Bu’ath approximately five years earlier.
Their joint reception was significant given their historical conflicts. Historical accounts describe how leaders of both tribes competed to host the Prophet (PBUH), leading him to famously declare, “Let my camel proceed; she is guided by Allah.”
This moment of unity contributed to the later establishment of the Constitution of Madinah—an important social contract that established principles for the diverse community.
The area around Ethiq Well was where:
- Early prayers may have been performed during their stay.
- The Prophet (PBUH) rested after the long and arduous journey from Makkah.
- Abu Bakr (RA) demonstrated his devoted companionship.

As Masjid Quba undergoes modern expansion, the preservation of Ethiq Well ensures this significant moment in Islamic history remains accessible for future generations.
