DELHI — A group of Umrah pilgrims traveling from Delhi to Saharanpur was violently confronted by Hindutva activists near a Hanuman temple in Yamuna Bazar on August 22, with victims alleging forced entry into the temple, physical coercion, and religious humiliation.
The pilgrims, including elderly individuals, were removing skullcaps and compelled to bow inside the temple while being forced to chant “Jai Shri Ram.”
The incident began when the pilgrims’ minibus stopped near the temple for a meal break.
A group led by Siddharth Sharma accused the passengers of “urinating on the roadside” before escalating into physical and verbal abuse. Sharma was filmed stating,
“This is our temple. I bow my head here, and now I will make them do the same.” The bus driver was also targeted with Islamophobic slurs for parking near the temple.
Delhi Police’s North District DCP Raja Banthia confirmed a complaint has been filed and that Sharma will be called for questioning.
The video recently went viral on social media, drawing widespread condemnation from civil society groups and Muslim organizations.
This incident occurs amid rising religious polarization and hate crimes targeting minorities in India.
