Astronomers and religious authorities in Saudi Arabia are preparing for a rare celestial event: a total solar eclipse that will pass directly over Makkah on Monday, August 2, 2027.

King Abdulaziz University’s Department of Astronomy Professor Abdullah Alkhudhairi confirmed that on August 2, 2027, the sun will be totally blocked by the moon for about three minutes.

Religious scholars have noted that witnessing an eclipse can prompt reflection on the signs of Allah’s creation, and special du‘ā (supplication) will be recited in the mosques.

The Ministry of Health and civil defense units will distribute protective eclipse glasses and manage crowd safety, particularly around the Grand Mosque’s courtyards.

The 2027 eclipse will be Makkah’s first confirmed total solar eclipse in modern recorded history.
