Friday Sermons and Prayers Shorten During Hajj 2025 Due to Extreme Heat

Facing daytime temperatures soaring above 45°C, Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais has instructed all imams at Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi to limit Friday sermons and Jumu‘ah prayers to no more than 15 minutes, and to reduce the interval between Adhan and Iqamah between 5 and 10 minutes.

In response to the extreme heat expected during this year’s Hajj season, Sheikh Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Sudais, President of the Religious Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, has issued a directive to shorten Friday khutbahs and prayers in Makkah and Madinah.

The decision aims to reduce physical strain on worshipers, particularly the elderly and those gathered in high-density areas such as the Mataf, upper floors, and mosque courtyards. As part of this initiative, the interval between the Adhan (call to prayer) and Iqamah (start of the sermon) will also be reduced.

Sheikh Al-Sudais explained that the move aligns with the religious leadership’s mission to ensure a safe and spiritually uplifting experience for pilgrims. He highlighted that this step is guided by Islamic teachings that prioritize easing hardship and safeguarding the well-being of worshipers, especially under harsh weather conditions.

With millions of pilgrims arriving for Hajj 1446 AH, the presidency is intensifying efforts to support their religious journey while maintaining their comfort and safety.

Sheikh Al-Sudais also urged pilgrims and visitors to make the most of these sacred days by engaging in acts of worship such as prayer, fasting, zakat, and the Hajj rites. He encouraged frequent recitation of tahleel (La ilaha illa Allah), tasbeeh (Subhan Allah), takbeer (Allahu Akbar), and tahmeed (Alhamdulillah), particularly during the blessed month of Dhu al-Hijjah.

He further reminded Muslims to follow the noble character of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and to treat fellow pilgrims and visitors with kindness, generosity, and respect—emphasizing the values of compassion and dignity during this sacred season.
