KARACHI — A major fire broke out late Tuesday at Millennium Mall on Rashid Minhas Road, engulfing the roof and sweeping down through the fourth and third floors, where dozens of garment shops and a small mosque are located.
Firefighters battled the inferno for over four hours before bringing it under control, officials said.
According to Chief Fire Officer Humayun Khan, the blaze began on the rooftop and rapidly spread downward. Initial firefighting efforts were hampered by a shortage of water at the scene.
“Once we secured additional water supplies, our crews were able to contain the flames and initiate a thorough cooling process,” Khan explained.
Despite the intense heat and extensive damage, Rescue 1122 personnel discovered 60 copies of the Quran stored in the mall’s third‑floor mosque—each Quran intact and free of scorch marks.
“Recovering these Qurans in perfect condition amid charred debris was a remarkable outcome,” a Rescue 1122 spokesperson said.
Merchandise and shop interiors were reduced to ashes, with preliminary estimates of losses running into the millions of rupees. All occupants, including shoppers and mall staff, evacuated safely once alarms sounded. Authorities confirmed no casualties.
The fire also severely damaged the mosque’s ceiling and prayer area, but the structural integrity of the building is still under assessment. Mall management has pledged full cooperation with investigators to determine the cause of the blaze, which remains unknown.
Police and fire inspectors continue to inspect the site, and repair work will commence once safety clearances are issued. In the meantime, the rescued Qurans have been handed over to mall authorities for secure preservation.
