Madinah is renowned for its diverse date varieties, such as Ruthana, Ajwa, and Anbara, produced from over 7 million palm trees across 29,000 farms.
During Ramadan, dates are a traditional food on the Iftar table for Muslims worldwide. At the Prophet’s Mosque, over 1.5 million dates are distributed daily to fasting individuals in the mosque and its courtyards as part of packaged meals served before the Maghrib prayer.
Each meal includes a package of seven dates, which are eaten when breaking the fast.
The dates distributed at the Prophet’s Mosque come in a variety of types, including Ruthana, Ajwa, Anbara, Safawi, Saq’i, Barni Al-Madinah, Barni Al-Ays, Bayda’ Al-Mahd, Al-Mabroum, Al-Hilya, Al-Jubaili, Al-Labbana, Al-Mashrouk, Al-Majdool, Al-Rabi’a, and Al-Shalabi. Madinah is renowned for its rich date heritage, with over 7 million palm trees spread across 29,000 farms.
These farms produce about 340,000 tons of dates annually, accounting for approximately 18% of Saudi Arabia’s total date production. Locally, these dates are sold, stored, processed, and packaged in various forms by 44 specialized factories.
