Are Tampons Halal in Islam? Can Muslim Women Use Them?

Is it permissible for Muslim women to use tampons? We explore the answer to this question and more in this blog post.

Are Tampons Halal or Haram?

Tampons are Halal.

Allah commands Muslims to stay clear of anything deemed impure or najasah. His words (interpretation of the meaning) affirm this;

And purify your garments!

al-Muddaththir 74:4

The menstrual flow of a female is regarded as impure, and her garments must be laundered if they come in contact with them.

To determine what products should be utilized, one should look at what is regularly employed by women. During the age of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), women would don specific clothing while experiencing the menstrual period.

When Hamnah bint Jahsh was menstruating, she went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and told him about her heavy flow. He instructed her to block it with cotton. But she said it was too intense. The Prophet then suggested that she estimate her menstrual cycle to be six or seven days, followed by twenty-three or twenty-four days of ghusl, prayer, and fasting. He added that delaying Zuhr and bringing ‘Asr forward, and delaying Maghrib and bringing ‘Isha forward, while doing ghusl, was the more preferred way. This has been narrated by Ibn Majah and classified as hasan according to al-Albani in his Sahih Sunan Ibn Majah.
