Twenty-seven people were heartlessly shot dead during Fajr prayers at a mosque in Natiaboani town in Burkina Faso. The attack took place the same day as an attack on the church in the same region.
Hundreds of attackers on motorbikes surrounded the mosque and targeted the Muslim worshippers, mostly men with wielding machine guns.
The eastern region of Burkina Faso has been plagued by the presence of several armed groups. There is no sign of a formal link between the church and mosque attacks after several people called it a “coordinated plot”.
Such attacks are not uncommon in Burkina Faso, previous reports of killings and abductions in recent years have made headlines. UN reports millions flee their homes from Burkina Faso due to insecurity, which also raises the alarming levels of child malnutrition.
Despite the military promises to eliminate the insurgent threats following a coup two years ago. But still, the violence exists.
