Governance of the Islamic Calendar in Hong Kong

The primary Islamic representative organization is The Incorporated Trustees of the Islamic Community Fund of Hong Kong (香港回教信託基金總會), established in 1922 by governmental ordinance. Working alongside the Chinese Muslim Cultural & Fraternal Association (香港中華回教博愛社) and the Islamic Union of Hong Kong, the Trustees coordinate with the Chief Imam of Kowloon Mosque to issue authoritative calendar announcements for the territory.

Moon Sighting and Astronomical Standards

On the 29th evening of each lunar month, sighting committees assemble at prominent observation locations, including Victoria Peak, southern coastal promontories, and high-altitude rooftop vantage points across Kowloon. If the nascent crescent (Hilal) is confirmed either by trustworthy visual sighting or verified regional astronomical criteria, the following day is designated the 1st of the new Hijri month; otherwise, the ongoing month completes 30 full days.

Time Zone and Daily Rollover Dynamics

Civil records and digital calendar feeds update at 12:00 AM midnight Hong Kong Time (HKT / Asia/Hong_Kong, UTC+8). However, for sacred observances, fasting declarations, and prayer times, each Islamic date begins at sunset with the adhan of Maghrib prayer, linking religious practice directly with the celestial cycle.
