UAE First Muslim Country To Report Three Monkeypox Cases

The United Arab Emirates reported three new cases of monkeypox identified in the country. It was announced directly by the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention on Sunday.

The three new cases emerged exactly a week after the country identified its first case of the virus, bringing the total number of monkeypox cases to four in the UAE.

As Arab News reported, the country quickly took action following the unified national medical guidelines for dealing with people infected with monkeypox and their contacts. The Ministry of Health said that infected people will be in complete isolation in hospitals until they recover while quarantining their close contacts for a period of not less than 21 at home with health conditions that will continue to be monitored and enforce their compliance with home isolation.

In addition, the Ministry also urges all community members to continue to follow appropriate precautionary measures when traveling and be more careful in large crowds, and avoid risky behaviors. It also reassured all communities that the necessary measures to contain the spread of this virus will be carried out by the UAE health authorities, including investigations, contact checks, and public health monitoring.

In the same statement, the Ministry explained that monkeypox is a viral disease, but it usually resolves on its own if compared to COVID-19. Most monkeypox infections are transmitted to humans through close contact with infected people or animals, including body fluids, respiratory droplets, and materials contaminated with the virus. It can also be transmitted to the baby in the womb.

The Ministry has also been working with other health authorities to implement an epidemiological surveillance system, in accordance with the highest global practices and to ensure sustainable efficiency and protection of the public from infectious diseases and rapid detection, as well as to limit the spread of all kinds of diseases and viruses including monkeypox.

The ministry also called on the public to only obtain information from official sources in the UAE, and refrain from spreading rumors and false information. The public is also reminded of the importance of following relevant developments and guidelines issued by the UAE health authorities.

World Health Organization (WHO) said that nearly 200 cases of monkeypox have been reported in more than 20 countries that are usually not known to have outbreaks of this unusual disease. However, the WHO believes that the spreading of this virus can be controlled.
