Kombucha is a fermented tea beverage that naturally develops ethanol during production.

Even though its alcohol content is usually small, Islamic law prohibits drinks produced through intentional alcoholic fermentation—regardless of intoxication level—if they meet the definition of khamr.

## Is Kombucha Halal?

### **No**, Kombucha is Halal. It is Haram.

Due to its intentional fermentation process and measurable alcohol content, kombucha falls under the prohibition of intoxicants in Islamic law, even if consumed in small quantities.

## Evidence from Qur’an and Sunnah

### **From Quran:**

> *“O you who have believed! Indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters, and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.”*
> *(Al-Mā’idah 5:90)*

### **From Sunnah/Hadith:**

> *“Every intoxicant is khamr, and every intoxicant is forbidden.”*
> *(Sahih Muslim, 2003a)*
>
> *The Prophet ﷺ clarified that if something intoxicates in large amounts, even small amounts are prohibited.*

> *“Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt.”*
> *(Sunan al-Tirmidhī, 2518)*

## Bottom Line

Kombucha is **not halal** because Kombucha’s alcohol (typically 0.5–2%) comes from deliberate fermentation, unlike trace, unintentional alcohol in bread or ripe fruit.

The fact that it is consumed as a beverage makes it fall under the category of drinks considered khamr if they contain ethanol.

**Safer alternative is herbal tea.**

**And Allah knows best.**
