Ashura means “The Day of Remembrance” and this falls on the 10th of Muharram to remember the martyrdom of Hussain Ibn Ali (RA).

These are the facts about the 10th Muharram (Ashura) that you need to know;
- Hussain Ibn Ali (RA) martyred in Karbala by Yazid forces. Hussain Ibn Ali (RA) was the son of Ali (RA) and Fatima (RA) and the Grandson of Muhammad (PBUH).
- Musa (AS) also known as Moses and his followers were saved from Pharoah as Allah created a route through the sea.
- It is mentioned in Sahih Muslim to fast on the 10th of Muharram. Back in time, A companion of the Prophet (PBUH), Abu Qatada had written in Sahih Muslim that fasting on the 10th of Muharram cleanses you from all kinds of sins.
- There is a misconception that Adam (AS) was created.
- There is another misconception that Allah Accepted the repentance of Adam (AS).
- It is false to believe that Ibrahim (AS) was born on this day.
- It is also false to believe that whoever baths on Ashura, will never fall ill.
- There is another misconception stating that no Nikkah should be done in Muharram.
- People believe that one must cook special foods and wear new clothes on the day of Ashura but this is a misconception. In fact, this act can be considered as Bidah.
- Musa (AS) also fasted on the 10th of Muharram to thank Allah for saving him and his nation from Pharoah and cruel force.
- Holding “Matam” (Matam means hitting one’s body to remember the martyrs of Karbala. It is HARAM in Islam, as in the Quran, it is strictly prohibited to hit one’s body or mourn someone’s death for more than 3 days.
- Muharram translates into “Sacred”.
- Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) restricted Muslims to fast only on the 10th Muharram while leaving the 9th Muharram behind. Because the Jews used to fast only on the 10th Muharram to remember Musa (AS). He (PBUH) said;
- Muslims have to fast on the 9th Muharram and 10th Muharram, both days. Fasting on the 10th of Muharram is prohibited as it is the ritual of Jews.
