Darren Osborne, a terrorist who drove a van that ran into people leaving Finsbury Park mosque, would possibly be blind in one eye after a fellow inmate at HMP Full Sutton attacked him on August 7 last year.
The attacker, a convicted murderer named Chandler, used a blade-like weapon made from a sharpened wooden tool attacking Osborne so violently that the weapon snapped and became stuck in Osborne’s forehead.
Osborne is currently serving a minimum sentence of 43 years in prison for the terrorist attack that killed one person, Makram Ali, and injured nine others, which he committed in June 2017.
Chandler went on trial for the vicious attack in Hull Crown Court today. It is known that he attacked Osborne while serving two sentences for murder and attempted murder.
Finsbury Park Mosque Attack
Chandler was previously sentenced to life with a minimum of 18 years for the murder of John Comer in 2017, then later received an additional 10 years after attacking another inmate at a Chelmsford jail. And as a result of the attack on terrorist Osborne, he has now landed an extra eight years in prison, thus doubling his sentence.
He will not be eligible for parole until 2056 when he will be 83 years old, says a judge.
According to Her Honour Judge McKone, Osborne had been left very frightened of losing the sight in his right eye, and although he would make a full recovery, he possibly need a glass eye in the future.
At an earlier hearing, Chandler had pleaded guilty to causing serious bodily harm and carrying a sharpened instrument in prison.
His attack was classified as the most serious category considering the pre-meditated nature and the extent of Osborne’s injuries, implying that he would face another life sentence.
However, Kevin Blount told the court that a further life sentence behind bars would erase any glimmer of his hope of becoming a free man.
Aware that Chandler was already facing a long spell in jail, Judge Mckone said that if he was not given further punishment for the violence then he would have no motivation to not continue to behave this way.
