**Not attending Eid Khutbah (Eid sermon) is not a sin**

Eid [prayer](https://theislamicinformation.com/blogs/7-sunnahs-eid/) is followed by a sermon called Eid Khutbah (Eid sermon). This was also a part of prayer during the times of the beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

## Importance of Eid Khutbah (Eid Sermon)

The Holy Prophet peace be upon him stated the purpose of the sermon too. **The purpose of the sermon is to thank Allah** and remind Muslims of their duties towards Allah. The sermon focuses on the importance of obedience to Allah's command.

*The Eid sermon is not only a formality. It is a road to guidance and communal harmony.*

It is a time to ponder the lessons learned during [Ramadan](https://theislamicinformation.com/blogs/important-dates-events-islamic-month-ramadan/). The Khutbah focuses on core Islamic teachings. The Imam reminds the congregation of the importance and value of charity and social justice.

## What to do if you miss Eid Khutbah (Eid Sermon)?

The majority of scholars state this as non-obligatory. The following are the scholars who have stated this At-Tahawi Al-Hanafi, Al-Hattab Al-Maliki, An-Nawawi Ash-Shafii, Ibn Qudamah Al-Maqdisi.

- Eid Khutbah is a Sunnah and an important part of Eid. However, **it is not obligatory**.

## **Is it mandatory to attend Eid Khutbah?**

### No, It is not mandatory.

Our beloved Prophet has made it clear that this **Khutbah is distinct from Jummah's Khutbah**. The latter one is obligatory.

Let's present it this way. This Khutbah is delivered after the prayer which **highlights it as non-obligatory**. The Eid Khutbah is not a place of personal opinions. It is neither a place of political speech.

The essence of Eid lies in the Eid prayer itself. The Khutbah delivered after Eid prayer is a significant Sunnah but is not mandatory. Muslims are encouraged to attend the Khutbah. This can benefit them with wisdom and knowledge.
